Decades ago I put Lithium into something automotive that had Moly (or reverse) and got hardened grease. Decades later I am still gun shy. Now there are lithium complex greases that have moly in them. What can we do if we have this problem ???
There is a really hot debate about which oil to use on the Lion v6 diesel (Land Rover, Citroen). LR recommends 5w30 in some markets, 5w40 in others whilst Citroen only recommend 5w40. If you Google LR Time you’ll see their take on it. Why would manufacturers spec two different oils and what’s the danger in using one versus the other????
Very interesting! What about the copper level rising in the 0W-30 tested?
My car has this problem, but its not a turbo, and it happens at idle under high load conditions, with air con. on, turning the steering wheel to the end of its course, or accelerating hard will cause pre detonation. There is a lot of oil vapor coming through the intake (car has 130,000 kms), also the valve stem seals are no longer doing their job. Without knowing about the GF-6 oil, my last oil change i used a mobil gf6 spec oil, but made no difference. I have to run pure ethanol, which wont pre detonate, while i´m still trying to discover the problem.

Here in Sweden it is B7, however, the reduction duty has been lowered on diesel in Sweden. the reason for B7 is that most diesel engines are not considered to be made for more than B7, however, they could also mix in a little HVO, i.e. Renewable diesel that can be mixed with regular fossil diesel
However, I have discovered that car brands can have different principles regarding approved fuel for different markets, for example Mazda when it comes to the ethanol content in different markets on a car model that has the same name in different markets. a car that is approved for renewable diesel in the US may not be in Europe. Here in Europe, the density says if the diesel meets the Diesel standard

Thank you for the information. Cellulose filter elements will collapse and lose filtration capability as they absorb water. It is not very effective when water is emulsified. SO it is not very effectiveto use cellulose when there is water in oil. Remember, water is always emulsified in hydraulic systems due to re-circulation through pump.

Cant wait for the final product and if these come in an Xw40 weight. I have three diesel cars to test the oil with in theory if this oil becomes available to the consumer market and comes in suitable viscosities. A 17 year old Volvo V70 with the D5244T engine ( I would need the oil as a 40 weight for this engine, its a Diesel developed over 20 years ago it does not like 30 weight) A new BMW 5 Series with a 286hp B57. A Renault K9K engine in a Mercedes Citan.

Good question. Most engine oils use the detergency of the oil to deal with a lot of that. My guess would be that there's some kind of neutral detergent in the formulation.

Thanks! Yeah its pretty interesting yo see what happens when they're let loose. Its a bit more common to see this kind of thing in industrial oils where there are fewer constraints.
It's like when someone would test Amsoil on a standard oil analysis report and it would show nothing special with traditional additives compared to shelf-brand oils, but it did 0 analysis on the actual composition of the oil beyond that so they would say... "There is nothing special about that oil". But if you look at the performance in actual engines compared to competition oils it would also perform in superior ways. The problem is the typical tests being done showing additives aren't telling the whole story. So much more in that oil versus the competition. For years I would argue this point and I was told I was crazy and that I was just over paying for the same oil I could get from a shelf-oil, yet I would see real world performance that would be far better. Superior cleanliness in engines and superior wear rates. I knew the truth. This is the same type of story! The tests they were using didn't show the whole composition to the oil so it looked the same as everything else out there on the shelf when it isn't.
Yes exactly, i have seen oils with better looking additive packs do worse. You could almost say the more robust additive pack was used to make up for a weak base oil.
Copper oleate? Tin oleate performs even better on the 4 ball tester. Why was one metal soap chosen over another? Why not lead fat, an antiwear additive predating ZDDP? And I do wish you lubricants influencers would speak less on elements and more on molecules.
Great comments. So firstly on the discussion of elements rather than molecules - its generally because oil analysis will only give you elements. We can guess at what molecules are being used, but they would only be guesses. In this instance, the Boron could be a borated ester, boron dispersant or a number of other molecules. Copper oleates, Copper DDPs and Copper PIBSAs both show up in papers as anti-wear additives. This is where companies get very careful about protecting IP. If I had to guess, lead fat isn't used because lead fell out of fashion a while back given the toxicity concerns. Same reasons why chlorinated paraffins and barium greases have mostly gone the way of the dodo. I've not seen much on Tin Oleates, but if caution from drawing too much info from a 4-ball test. It doesn't always translate very well to real world performance.

You are forgetting about the most important contributor to fuel efficiency, and that is temperature control. We gained 18% in petrol and 27% on LPG on a EB Falcon bacck in about 93/94 with a test vehicle supplied by RACV when we fitted components to correct the coolant temperature on the 4.0 Liter 6 cylinder engine dual fuel.
Those darn low tension rings are a curse.
Yet another rating and term that is not exactly indicitive of oil specification/charecteristics on a linear scale. Thanks mate. I did notice that the majority of Penrite and Nulon oils regardless of group 3 or 4 seem to be around the 150-170 range. But now with 16 different ways of measuring, how do you compare them.
Would be nice to see you do more on Penrite, Nulon and Gulf Western. Penrite and Nulon both advertise Zinc not the phosphorus.

On Hyundai Kia GDI 2011-2019 there is a unburnt amount of fuel at each cold start. Another possible issue is very common engine cover seal leak, causing oil to accumulate around the spark plugs - when car is parked this oil leaks inside the cylinder on top of the piston and into ring grooves - over time it gums up oil rings. A second oil consumption context in Hyundai is scored cylinders and worn compression rings due to cylinder wall wash (from the same unburnt gasoline) associated with very low rpm prolonged driving - those GDI engines prefer to stay around 1000 rpm when cruising at certain speeds
